Deception Island surrounds the caldera of an active volcano, where one section of its rim has collapsed into the sea. The caldera, which is 5.6 miles long and 3.7 miles wide, was filled by the Antarctic Sea forming a bay named Port Foster. The entrance to the bay is via a narrow, 755 foot channel called Neptune’s Bellows. We landed on the north side of the caldera in Telefon Bay. From our landing point we hiked up the ridge to a small lake, continued along the ridge, and then descended down to the beach about a quarter mile to the west of our landing point. It was roughly a 2.5 miles hike. We were fortunate that the weather was clear.
