1st Backpacking Trip for 2010
I know, it’s sad that it’s taken me this far into the year to go on a trip. But that’s just the way this year has worked out.
Trip was with Jon B. and we went to Desolation Valley on 8/27. Trailhead was Wrights Lake. Walked up to Grouse Lake and made camp at Hemlock Lake. Moved on Saturday to Island Lake. We encountered a brief snow flurry on the way down from Hemlock Lake at 8,200′ elevation at 10 a.m.
Walk to Island Lake was leisurely but very windy and cold. Didn’t make it to freezing but it sure felt like it. Weather wasn’t conducive to doing much so, it was nap time until dinner. Found a spot below a rock outcropping and had dinner. Cleaned up and then went to sleep.
Walk out next morning was better. The wind had died down but it still was chilly. Lo cal lunch of salami, cheese, and Ritz crackers at 11:00. Yes, a bit early but trail lunch tastes 100 times better on the trail rather than back in the parking lot. Plus the view was much better, too. At the car about 1:00p.m. and home by 3:00p.m. Desolation Valley is a great resource for northern California. Quota system keeps overnight campers spread out and at a more than tolerable number.
Updated website theme and lost pictures
Well, sometimes things don’t go as planned. I updated the theme template and lost the rotating photos in the masthead. Should have thought about the new theme completely overwriting the code. Will work on getting masthead photos back up again. Sigh.:(

Four Pound Fishing Trip- 2010

Yep, the Four Pound Fishing Trip has come and gone for 2010. Pretty much the same crew. But what a difference a week makes. We were at Digger Creek Ranch on May 21 to 23 and there was rain, hail, and snow. Low temperatures were in the 20’s and the highs weren’t much above the low 40’s. But we caught fish… and had fun.
Welcome
My site is focused on photographs I’ve taken while traveling. Some flyfishing and backpacking photos, too. Hope you enjoy. -Sam

National Geographic Exhibit- Terracotta Soldiers
Go here Terracotta Soldiers to view the National Geographic web site on their new exhibit in Washington, D.C. featuring the Terracotta Soldiers (http://www.nationalgeographic.com/terracottawarriors/index.html).

New Images for Header.
So now the header images are snipets from my photographs. Hope that they intrigue and interest you.
I had to get sick and stay home to find the time to figure out the rotating headers for this theme. Once reading the instructions (that is a rarity for me), it was very easy. Then had to play around with the default banners to figure out the optimal image size for my photos.
Thinking of China- Fall 2010
Starting to explore the idea of China trip this fall. Chengdu Panda Sanctuary, a couple of national parks, and Shanghai for World Expo.
Thoughts, recommendations of other locales? Want to go?
Hi and Happy New Year!
Hope that you are enjoying the start of 2010. Please take a look around the site and explore. It is focused on photographs I’ve taken on various trips. Oh, some flyfishing and backpacking, too. Welcome. -Sam Oki
